When Gena told her friends in California, oh so many moons ago, that she was moving to Colorado they all shuddered at the thought. Did she know about the snow? Duh. But it's not what people imagine here in Arvada. Gena likes how Denise's husband, Mark, put it when he said "Everyone in Californina thinks we're buried in snow all winter and we like them to think that. It keeps them away."
Above is a picture taken from Gena's back door. Notice the chairs, stacked four high, popping out of the snow drift? This is the amount of snowfall in six hours and it's still coming.
Gena doesn't mind snow. It's pretty. It's white. It's fluffy. It's great to make snow ice cream with. It's much needed moisture. THIS snow is like being buried in a melted snow cone. Proof? Gena's van is at the foot of her hill on her street. As Steve and Gena left the store with basic survival supplies (milk, flour, sugar, "Quantum of Solace") they should have had a return trip of, oh, 10 minutes? Nuh-uh. Two and a half hours.
Gena's daughers decided to have a "grand adventure" (Allison's quote). Steve was determined to shovel enough slush off the hill around the family's second car to get it up the hill. That's right. The smaller front wheel drive car was brought to the bottom of the hill to rescue fair damsel, and domestic goddess, Georgena, and made it half way up the hill. The intrepid young women had two thoughts on their minds; to rescue the apple juice to drink and the flour and sugar so they could have homemade cookies. Said fair damsel was glad to see the enthusiasm since she had biffed it big time in the snow and her 46 year old body was aching from knees and elbows hitting the slush covered pavement. No picture of that, thank you.
Off they went. Their determined Daddy had struggled with his car and was within two houses away! The flour wasn't saturated! The sugar was dry! The apple juice was cold! (the movie had made the trek up the hill with the fair damsel)
Gena isn't too sad to miss substituting in middle school language arts today, and maybe tomorrow. She can stay home sniffling, sneezing and coughing in warm comfort where people will actually feel sorry for her.
Gena is deeply grateful that her family is warm, dry and happy. Happy? Oh, didn't she tell you? Gena's honey, Steve, got a job offer this afternoon. Here. In lovely Colorado.
ps. Allison wants to know if anyone can tell which bundled up girl is which... let us know... Helen messed up!

I cannot tell you how HAPPY we are for our Farias!!!! Not that you are snow bound but that you have great blesings to smile about tonight!! Praise Heaven above! And don't get lost in your blizzard!
EXCELLENT news, indeed!!! I am so happy for you!
Love your snow pictures, I forgot to document mine, as I was busy documenting the Extreme Home Makeover: Powder Room Edition going on at my house!
SO happy for you.
Hi Gena, Cute story, I'm not a snow lover so it looks "not fun" to me and sorry about you biffing it! I'm so happy to hear about Steve's job offer, you didn't mention whether or not he accepted it, but if so, how great that you won't have to be moving, etc. We were kind of pulling for Park City but I'm sure this will be better for all of you. Maybe you'll still beable to come to Utah for a visit sometime soon. We'll hope for that.
CONGRATS CONGRATS!!! I'm so so happy for you guys!!! That is like the best news!
I also love your cute story. You are the best writer! O.K. I really have absolutely no idea which girl is which. But here's my guess. Emily on the left Allison on the right (our left and right looking at them from this angle) Let me know if I'm right or wrong:)
Sorry it's still snowing there. On the other side of life it will be 80 for a high tomorrow. Which is o.k. if it doesn't get to hot to quick!
Love you, JoLynn
Dear Helen, Will you tell me about your geneological line to Jacob Hamblin, i.e., which wife, etc. I thought I understood it but I'm not so sure. I thought about asking Brent but I think you are a much better source. HA! I hope you are surviving the blizzard conditions there in Colorado. I know Spring is on it's way because it has arrived here in St. George.
Gena, Thanks so much for the family history info. I was working at the Temple on Thursday morning and a man named Hamblin came in. We got to talking, he is a great grandson of Jacob. Anyway, I realized I didn't know how many greats Brent was and I didn't know from which wife (one of the questions this man asked me). So thanks, next time I'll be smarter, I'm sure I'll see him again, he's a regular. I want to say again how happy I am for Steve's new job. You did a wonderful job of masking your worry, etc. but every now and then it would show a little and my heart ached, so I'm just so excited for your family. Also, I sooo wish you would show up at Portal H, you and Helen and maybe even Marianne!! That would be so much fun. I hope you will really consider it! BTW, I asked Brent this morning how many "greats" of a grandson he is...he has NO clue!! I'm going to give him a family history lesson tomorrow during Sunday dinner!! I wish he could remember important stuff like he can remember sports players, teams, scores, etc.!!
I'm guessing Alli on the left, Emmy on the right.
Oh don't we just all love the snow :)
Gena, I don't even have to ask him....he doesn't!! My e-mail address is cougarnana@hotmail.com
It looks so cold!!! Move here to ST George...it is just beautiful...but then you would not have fun in those fantastic get up's! They both look SO cozy!
Grandma Helen, I just read your comment on my blog. I'm excited to receive the info on Jacob Hamblin. After I have studied a little more about his life, I want to take Gavin and Savanna to Santa Clara to the Jacob Hamblin home on a little field trip. I think they will enjoy it. We are so happy about Steve's new job, what a blessing for all of you. Be sure to check out Kami and Brent's blog, Brent has a new post that I know you'll enjoy reading. Love, Nancy
